The most common mistake in a small wedding is treating it as a large wedding with the guests removed. That produces a day with the structure of a big event and none of its energy — a room too large, a schedule with nothing to fill it, and a couple wondering what to do between the ceremony and dinner.
A small wedding works when it is designed as its own thing. Here is how we shape them.
Who elopes to Bled, and why
Three groups, roughly.
Couples who want the day itself and nothing else. No seating plan, no politics, no speeches from people they barely know. Just the vows, the lake, a very good dinner and a bottle of something.
Couples marrying twice. A large celebration at home for the families, and a private ceremony at Bled that belongs to them. Often the second one turns out to be the one they mean.
Couples with a small circle. Ten to thirty people who all genuinely matter. Not an elopement in the strict sense, but planned exactly the same way.
The shape of a small wedding day
At two to thirty people, the day is made of moments, not blocks. Our advice, from watching these work and occasionally not work:
Start later than you think. A ceremony at two in the afternoon leaves seven hours to fill with six people. Late afternoon is better: the light is better too.
Put something between the ceremony and dinner. A boat to the island. A walk around the lake — it takes about an hour and a half at a gentle pace and is one of the loveliest walks in Europe. A drive up to a viewpoint. Something that gives the day a middle.
Eat somewhere that fits the number. A table for eight in the corner of a ballroom is a sad photograph. Ask for a room proportioned to your party.
Do not compress the parts that matter. Small does not mean brief. Long dinners are the whole point.
Keep one thing for after dark. A last drink by the water, a walk out to look at the illuminated castle. Small weddings end abruptly if nothing is planned past the dessert.
What to spend on when there are few of you
The budget arithmetic inverts. With a small party, the per-person lines shrink to almost nothing, and the fixed lines — photography, flowers, the officiant, the boat — stay exactly the same. Which means:
- Photography becomes affordable at a level you could not otherwise consider. With no guests, the photographs are the record. This is where the money should go.
- Food becomes affordable at a level you could not otherwise consider. Ten people can eat like ten people at a very good restaurant, for less than eighty people eating adequately.
- Flowers stay expensive per stem but cheap in total. One extraordinary arrangement rather than twelve modest ones.
- The venue’s fixed costs matter more. Ask whether there is a minimum spend, and what it is on a weekday out of season.

The legal question
Many eloping couples complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at Bled with a celebrant. It removes months of document work and gives complete freedom over the words, the place and the hour. If you want the legal ceremony here, the paperwork is the same as for any wedding in Slovenia — see getting legally married in Slovenia.
Where we come into it
Bled Rose Hotel is a four-star hotel directly on the shore, and small weddings are the ones our team is most personally involved in — with two guests, everyone in the building knows your names by the afternoon.
For a very small wedding we would usually suggest: vows in the garden by the water; the walk or the boat afterwards; dinner in the Master’s Room, which is proportioned for a small table rather than borrowed from a ballroom, or in the restaurant, whose kitchen is recognised by Gault&Millau and listed by Falstaff; a room upstairs so that nobody drives; and the wellness area the next morning while everyone else in Slovenia is at work.
One honest note. The most beautiful small weddings we host are on weekdays outside high summer — late May, June, the first half of September, or a still, cold week in winter. The lake is quiet, the light is better, and the whole hotel has time for you. See the best time of year.

Frequently asked questions
Can you elope to Lake Bled? Yes. Bled is one of the most popular elopement destinations in Europe. Couples either complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here, or marry legally through the local administrative unit.
How many guests is an elopement? Anywhere from two to about twenty. Above thirty it plans like a small wedding rather than an elopement — the difference is whether the day needs a seating plan.
How much does a Lake Bled elopement cost? Far less than a full wedding, because the per-person costs almost disappear. The fixed costs — photography, flowers, the officiant, the boat — stay the same regardless of numbers, so they make up most of a small budget.
What is there to do on the day besides the ceremony? A pletna boat to the island and the 99 steps; the walk around the lake, about ninety minutes; the castle above the town; or simply a long dinner started early. Small weddings need one planned middle to the day.
Is a weekday cheaper? Almost always, and at Bled it is also quieter and prettier. If your date can move by a day, say so in your first enquiry.
