The single most useful thing on a destination wedding website is a clear travel page. Not because guests cannot use a map, but because sixty people each researching the same question separately produces sixty different plans, half of them wrong.
Here is the version we would give your guests.
The short answer
Fly to Ljubljana. Slovenia’s Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is about thirty minutes by road from Bled — one of the shortest airport-to-lake transfers in alpine Europe. For most guests, nothing else is worth considering.
The alternatives, and when they make sense
If flights to Ljubljana are inconvenient or expensive from your guests’ cities, these are the realistic alternatives, with approximate driving times to Bled:
| Airport | Approx. drive to Bled | Worth it when |
|---|---|---|
| Ljubljana (LJU) | ~30 minutes | Always, if the flight exists |
| Klagenfurt (KLU) | ~1 hour 15 | Guests coming from Austria |
| Trieste (TRS) | ~2 hours | Italian connections |
| Zagreb (ZAG) | ~2 hours | Regional and some long-haul routes |
| Venice Marco Polo (VCE) | ~3.5 hours | Cheap long-haul and low-cost flights; popular, and the drive is beautiful |
| Munich (MUC) | ~4.5 hours | Long-haul connections; a long but easy motorway drive |
Treat all of these as approximations for planning, not promises — traffic in summer, particularly around Venice and on the Karawanks tunnel route, can add meaningfully to them.
By train: the nearest station is Lesce-Bled, a few kilometres from the lake, reachable from Ljubljana and connected onwards into Austria. A taxi covers the last stretch.
By bus: regular coaches run from Ljubljana city and the airport to Bled; the journey is around an hour and a quarter from the city.
By car: Bled is just off the motorway from Ljubljana. If your guests are driving from Austria, Italy or Croatia, note that Slovenian motorways require a vignette — an electronic toll sticker bought in advance or at the border. It is inexpensive, and it is the single most common thing foreign guests forget.
What to put on the invitation
Four lines, no more:
- Fly to Ljubljana (LJU), thirty minutes from the hotel. Second choice: Venice or Klagenfurt.
- The transfer we have arranged, or the taxi arrangement, with a booking link or a phone number.
- Whether a hire car is needed. For a wedding where everything happens at one address, it is not — and telling guests that saves them a few hundred euros each.
- The vignette warning for anyone driving.
Transfers: three options in order of calm
Group transfer at fixed times. Two or three coaches or minibuses meeting the arrival waves. Cheapest per person, simplest to manage, and it starts the weekend socially — guests meet each other on the bus.
Pre-booked private transfers. One vehicle per family or group. More expensive, entirely reliable, and worth it for elderly relatives and anyone arriving at an awkward hour.
Everyone arranges their own. Fine for a small wedding. Above roughly forty guests it produces a stream of individual questions to you, in the last week, when you have other things to do.
Whatever you choose, put one person in charge of travel who is not the couple.
Do guests need a car at Bled?
Usually not, and this matters more than it sounds. Bled is walkable: the path all the way around the lake takes about ninety minutes at a gentle pace and is one of the nicest walks in Europe. If the ceremony, dinner, party and rooms are at one address — as they are with us — a car is only useful for excursions.
Telling guests this in advance removes a real cost from their trip and removes several cars from your car park.

Frequently asked questions
What is the closest airport to Lake Bled? Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU), roughly thirty minutes away by road.
How do you get from Ljubljana airport to Bled? By pre-booked transfer, taxi, hire car or scheduled bus. For a wedding party, a coordinated group transfer timed to the main arrival waves is usually the calmest and cheapest option.
Can you fly to Venice and drive to Lake Bled? Yes — roughly three and a half hours by road, and a common choice for guests using low-cost or long-haul flights. Allow more time in summer traffic.
Do wedding guests need a car at Lake Bled? Not if the wedding happens at a single address. Bled is walkable and the lake path takes about ninety minutes to circle.
Do I need a vignette to drive in Slovenia? Yes, for motorways. Buy it before you cross the border or at the first service station — it is inexpensive, and driving without one is fined.
